Jesse Corrigan, a well-known North East sportsman who has been in custody since February 10, was yesterday granted bail with strict conditions.
Corrigan, 27, who lives at Lavington and was bailed to a Howlong home, is accused of breaking into Scribblers Cafe between 7.15am and 9am and stealing from staff, before heading to Big W and approaching a woman who was about 35 weeks pregnant.
He is said to have grabbed his genitals and said: “you want some more of this, don’t you” and “I want to give it to you”.
Then, at Vain Hair and Beauty Salon about noon, he apparently stole two handbags before exposing himself to a staff member at Evans Shoes.
He is said to have then broken into a unit on Reid Street and stolen from a sleeping woman, exposed himself to a woman and grabbed another from behind at APCO, before exposing himself to a woman in Baker Street.
He is also accused of masturbating in front of two girls swimming in the Ovens River.
Yesterday’s hearing at the Wangaratta Magistrates Court heard Corrigan, who had an ice pipe when arrested, may have been suffering from a cannabis-induced psychosis.
Magistrate Gerard Bryant said while drug psychosis may explain some of his bizarre and disturbing offending, other actions suggested he knew what he was doing.
“If you get bail and relapse into drug use, you’d effectively be handing yourself the keys back into custody,” he said.
“As a community, we can’t afford to take another risk you go out on a cannabis or ice binge.”
Mr Bryant said Corrigan needed to have a look at his life.
“You can’t afford to put a foot wrong,” he said.
“You need to take a long, hard look at where your life is heading and whether cannabis and methamphetamine will be part of your landscape.”
Corrigan, who also uses the names Dale and Corrigan-Dale, acknowledged he would “go back to me cell” if he broke his bail conditions.
He will reappear on April 15 on 12 charges involving obscene exposure, theft and trespassing.
