The Nationals deputy leader has been presented with a petition from people living in and around Euroa requesting the town be made a “stop as required” station on the line.
“The issue has been a long-standing one for people living in Euroa and surrounding areas who are forced to drive to either Benalla or Seymour should they wish to travel on the line,” she said.
“Residents of Euroa, Balmattum, Longwood, Ruffy, Strathbogie and Violet Town would all benefit from the service, and the 565 signatures on the petition are testament to this.”
Ms Ryan said it was more important than ever after Labor axed the Coalition’s plan for a $178 million country rail package which would have placed additional services on the North-East line.
“Not only has Daniel Andrews scrapped $160 million in funding for country roads and bridges, he has also dramatically reduced funding for country rail,” she said.
“None of Labor’s commitment to country rail is earmarked for the North East line.”
Ms Ryan has sent the petition to NSW TrainLink (formerly CountryLink) and also written to both the Victorian and NSW transport ministers requesting their support.
“For many residents, the XPT is the only service that arrives in Melbourne before 9am, which can make getting to work, meetings and appointments in the city very difficult,” she said.
