Only six months after spending time on court during the world basketball championships in Dubai, the talented Wodonga 17-year-old has been named in the TAC Cup club’s 41-man squad.
Murray Bushrangers coach Darren Ogier said McMullan had worked hard to make the transition from basketball over the pre-season.
“It’s taken him a while to get his footy fitness but he reads the game well, moves well and is a good size,” Ogier said.
“He’s shown some promise.
“Basketballers often adapt pretty well.”
McMullan was a member of the Australian under-17 team that claimed the silver medal to the powerful US team at the FIBA world championships last year.
He also sank two free throws with less than 10 seconds left on the clock to guide Wodonga Wolves to victory in the Country Basketball League grand final last month.
Albury juniors dominate the Bushrangers’ squad, with seven players winning spots, while Benalla and Shepparton Bears have three each.
“At this point we are happy with the squad,” Ogier said.
“The boys have worked hard. It’s probably not as tall as last year as it’s a bit more even across the board.”
Selectors have also named a 16-player rookie list including Lavington’s Jack Kirley, Wodonga’s George Haynes and Trent Williamson, Wodonga Raiders’ Matt Neagle, Albury’s Cooper Page and Abe Spargo and Mulwala’s Jayden Gallagher and Jacob Sampson.
The Bushrangers will round off their preparation with a pre-season camp at Yarrawonga this weekend.
