I JUST got back from a holiday to Queensland and I’m amazed at how some towns attract tourism and the money that comes with it. A lot of towns have showgrounds or areas set up for free campers and caravaners and attract large numbers and large profits and yet Albury seems to discourage them.

The Caboolture Show Society did a survey and said: “For the past month our staff have been running an experiment to see how much our campers contribute to the local economy. We have had a bucket in the camp area into which campers were asked to place receipts for locally bought goods and services. We have just totalled up the ones for August and they came to $310,000. As not every purchase would have been added the total was probably even more. That is one hell of a boost to local traders.”
It shows what a positive attitude can do. I bet our local businesses could do with $3,720,000 a year.
