The Magpies stalwart will lead the Ovens and Murray side against the Peninsula Football League in May.
Norton said he was looking forward to working with the best young players.
“It’s a great opportunity to cultivate some of the best up-and-coming players in the league,” Norton said.
“Hopefully I can help develop some of these players into guys that will be representing the league for many years to come.”
After being an assistant coach for the side for a number of years, Norton was thrilled to get the call-up into the top job.
“I’m pretty chuffed to take the reins,” Norton said.
“There’s plenty of time now for me to take a good look at the list and suss out how we’ll approach putting the team together.
“I feel like I’ve got a pretty good knowledge of the kids we have running around the O and M, I’m looking forward to putting a good side together and getting the job done.”
Norton was the obvious choice for Ovens and Murray general manager Aaron McGlynn, who cited Norton’s illustrious league history and experience coaching the third grade as reasons for his appointment.
“Carl was the standout choice for us, he’s seen the majority of the kids up for selection in his time coaching the third grade, and he has an outstanding rapport with them as well,” McGlynn said.
The inter-league match has been switched from the usual under-18 grade players to under-19s after consultation with the opposition Peninsula Football League.
