In an overhaul of the leadership group, Cooper, pictured, will lead the Pigeons with Beau Seymour and Matt Gorman stepping up as vice-captain.
Cooper will take over from Drew Barnes who has been captain-coach for the past four seasons.
“It was a bit of a shock,” Cooper said yesterday.
“I’m honoured with the quality of the players we have the club.”
Cooper has been a sensation for Yarrawonga since joining the Pigeons from Picola and District league club Tungamah.
Despite arriving at J.C. Lowe Oval with little fanfare five seasons ago, he has become one of the league’s premier midfielders with his class and hard-nosed approach.
“It’s been brilliant at Yarra,” Cooper said.
“I’ve been lucky to play in two flags and another three grand finals.
“You can’t complain about that.”
Cooper, 28, is confident Yarrawonga will remain around the mark despite being quiet on the recruiting front over the off-season.
“Pre-season numbers have been pretty good,” he said.
