Students jumped and cheered with excitement when the group of 15 cyclists involved in the 2015 Variety Cycle rode into the school, which was a rest stop on the way to Wangaratta.

Pedalling from Sydney to Hobart, the riders are raising money for Aussie kids along the way through children’s charity Variety.

Children at the school raised $322 to go toward the cyclists $1 million fundraising target.

Principal Bernie Boulton said he hoped the day would help the kids learn how they can give back to the community and be active citizens.

Student Will Heiner, 11, is part of the SRC committee who gave a surprise cheque to the cyclists with money they raised from a crazy colour day.

“We made it a crazy colour day because bike riders wear bright colours so cars can see them,” he said.

“We did an article in the school newsletter, made posters and asked the parents’ club to donate Zooper Doopers and we made a big cheque ourselves to give to the cyclists.”

Yesterday was day six and the longest leg of the ride, with cyclists pushing themselves 204km from Corryong to Wangaratta.

Founder and chairman of Variety Cycle Cristopher Mapp said the ride was to raise money for kids who have disabilities.

“It’s about empowering children to have healthy life, it gives me a huge buzz to see kids with disabilities smiling and their parents too.”
