The Fish Out of Water group has collected more than 400 registrations of support for the multimillion-dollar facility.
The group’s initial goal is to obtain 500 registrations of support.
The registrations got a spike at Wednesday night’s Big Splash event at the Albury Swim Centre, which raised $15,000 for headspace Albury-Wodonga.
Fish Out of Water members are petitioning the Border’s federal and state politicians as well as Albury and Wod-onga councillors, arguing the pool would draw state and national swimming, diving and water polo competitions to the Border.
As a starting point, the lobby group is asking Albury Council to dip its toes into the water on the idea with an extension of the Albury pool season by 10 weeks.
It is due to close mid-April but the Fish Out of Water group says the short-term trial would be an ideal way to gauge public interest.
It would seem to be a reasonable idea, and one that may well be welcomed by many pool lovers in the community.
