The most recent crash at the McKoy Street intersection on Tuesday involved two trucks, with both drivers escaping injury. Another crash in January involved a four-wheel-drive rolling five or six times, with an elderly man having to be freed.
VicRoads has confirmed the intersection is one of the “worst performing” in the state, and has reacted to the spate of crashes with a move to slow traffic 30km/h in peak times.
Signage will appear in coming weeks to warn drivers of an 80km/h limit on that stretch of freeway between the hours of 7am and 7pm.
It is hoped the lower speed will give drivers more of a chance to get through the intersection safely. But that will of course depend on them adhering to the new speed.
There should be no excuses for speeding but the signage for the new limit will have to be given adequate prominence.
It is not a spot where a driver coming through from Sydney or Melbourne might expect an 80 km/h zone to pop up.
