One of Tallangatta’s two English imports, and man of the match in the grand final win over East Albury on Sunday, was yesterday dressed in an op shop bath robe and fluffy slippers, savouring the spoils of three hard weeks of cricket.
He said the only thing that wasn’t hurting was his back.
Weighell averaged about seven overs a game in the home and away season.
But in three weeks of finals, that became more than 21 — including the 24 overs he bowled in Sunday’s decider.
“I didn’t play much cricket in the English summer and when I came out here we decided to take it slowly,” he said.
“But when it came to the finals I decided to just give it a blast — surprisingly I didn’t really feel it and while everything, including my head, is hurting today, the back feels pretty good.
“I can’t really explain it.”
Weighell, 22, said the self-belief in the Tallangatta side had never wavered.
“I really don’t know why, but we always believed we were going to win,” he said.
“Even in the first semi- final when Wodonga, one of the better batting line-ups in the league, needed 25 runs with five wickets in hand we still never felt like losing.
“That sort of self-belief resulted in some great catches and an unlikely victory defending just 170.”
Weighell’s 13 wickets in the three finals was matched by starring roles with the bat, including 68 on Saturday at Les Cheesley Oval.
“I think my bowling was more important in the finals; every time I bowl I give it 120 per cent, but the batting is more natural — once you get yourself in you know you can bat and you just swing away,” he said.
“I know I concentrated more on my bowling in the finals, but my batting is almost second nature.”
The Yorkshireman and fellow traveller Josh Bousfield return to England on Friday.
“There’s a big chance I’ll be back next year — more for the family than the cricket,” Weighell said.
