The would-be thief can be seen from several angles on CCTV footage throwing a piece of concrete at the ATM outside Myer about midnight.
The offender escaped empty-handed, but left the ATM out of order with a repair bill of thousands of dollars.
Hume Bank general manager customer service sales and marketing Melissa Sweetland said the attack was an inconvenience for customers.
“It was hugely disappointing as we are a local bank,” Miss Sweetland said.
“We are owned by our customers who bank with us and we are disappointed someone would do that to their own community.
“It is one of our most popular ATMs because parking is quite convenient.”
The man who attempted the break-in was wearing a dark button-up shirt, cream-coloured pants, a wrist band and had his head covered with a light piece of cloth.
The Myer branch remained open and it is hoped the ATM will be up and running again by the end of today.
In the meantime Hume customers can use several ATMs in the city centre.
