But the Salvos are reporting far fewer young people available to take part as volunteers in recent years, with parents increasingly concerned about their children’s safety.
Now the Salvos, recognising parental concern, are sending a message to parents and students that they have introduced new precautions to alleviate those fears.
They include providing safety information to students ahead of the day and ensuring they travel in small groups under the supervision of an adult with a working with children check.
This is a good move on the part of the Salvation Army which greatly relies on the appeal to have the funds to provide a wide array of services to those in need.
No one can doubt the value of the Salvos’ services; nor can we doubt that demand for those services will continue to grow.
Hopefully the message will be taken up by parents and students ahead of this year’s appeal, and those young people who do get involved can be assured their assistance will be gratefully received.
