The team at The Border Mail do a fine job of informing the locals of all the pertinent news we need to know, and have successfully campaigned where they see a need for improved facilities for our region — the new cancer treatment centre, the highway bypass, and the proposed headspace facility are just a few examples of what a dedicated team can achieve.
The standards of journalism are consistently first rate.
Add to this the excellent production standards, and you have a shining example of a great community asset, and probably a profitable enterprise as well.
I support efficient business practices to achieve better results, but I was horrified to see on Media Watch the extent of the proposed cuts to staffing levels at The Border Mail, and other Fairfax regional papers.
To try and maintain quality journalism with half a newsroom, and with little editorial leadership, would appear to be a recipe for disaster.
Please don’t try and solve the circulation problems of Fairfax city papers by decimating your regional journals.
