And no doubt their eyes were all on the prize: a fascinator owned by horse trainer Gai Waterhouse, auctioned off for charity.
More than 220 women — plus two men, including Albury mayor Kevin Mack — gathered for the 16th annual Gold Cup Charity luncheon, now just as much a staple of the Albury racing calendar as the Gold Cup itself.
The charity aimed to raise at least $20,000 this year, with funds going to Aspect Riverina Albury, Aspire Support Services Early Childhood Intervention, Hume Public School special education, and the original recipient of the fundraiser — Wewak Street School.
As those in attendance chatted over glasses of champagne and indulged in a sumptuous lunch, they fiercely bid on a variety of items for the charity auction.
But the item that caused the biggest stir came in the form of an aqua fascinator Waterhouse once wore, and obtained for auction by Lauren Cavanough, daughter of local trainer Brett.
Modelled by Cate Miller, wife of Albury Racing chief’s executive John Miller, the stunning piece was “heavy, but comfortable”.
It ended up going for $400.
