The annual Commercial Club Albury Gold Cup has become the Border’s number one social event of the year with many planning outfits and seeking milliners weeks ahead.
Celebrity and Myer ambassador Kris Smith will head the judging team at the Myer fashions on the field along with city model Nikki Phillips.
The Myer fashions on the field competition will feature three sections — lady of the day, gentleman of the day and a millinery award with $37,000 in prizes.
Smith said he would be looking for racegoers dressed appropriately for the weather.
“To stand out in each category co-judges and I will be looking for an expression of individual racing style, current season trends and confidence,” he said.
“Entrants need to express their own racing style, those who always catch my eye demonstrate current trends while incorporating their own individuality of racing fashion.”
Do
- Express your own sense of racing style — focus on the appropriateness of the outfit for the race day and the individual.
- Demonstrate that you understand current fashion trends.
- Display attention to detail with accessories and millinery.
- Focus on your personal presentation — superior grooming and deportment are essential.
- Consider suitability and appropriateness of the outfit for the climate.
Don’t
- Don’t wear brand new shoes — ensure that shoes have been worn in, even if they have only been worn around the house.
- Don’t wear an outfit that is too revealing or skimpy. Race fashion is all about elegance and sophistication.
- Don’t wear millinery that is so over the top that it gets in the way of other patrons.
- Don’t wear a strapless, backless number — dress appropriately for the autumn weather.
Smith, who is used to strutting the catwalk, said getting dressed up is one of his favourite things about the races.
“I love putting on a tailored suit and looking sharp and taking a risk with bold prints and accessories, ” he said.
“I love a day out at the track with friends and I don’t mind the odd bet either.
“The races always have such a great atmosphere, it’s always so good seeing the trackside fashion.”
Albury Racing Club’s Myer fashions on the field co-ordinator Sarah Crothers said she was always impressed by the effort women go to with many planning months in advance.
“It’s a great day out and naturally everyone wants to look their best,” Ms Crothers said.
“The hard thing about choosing an outfit for the Albury cup is in between seasons but it’s all about autumn racewear now.”
Registration is compulsory, starting at 10.30am to 12.50pm.
