A 45-year-old Benalla man attended a home this week with his 28-year-old partner to retrieve a debt, which is thought to have been linked to cannabis dealing.
The man forced his way inside the house and assaulted a man before grabbing the victim’s partner by the neck.
He made threats to the couple in front of their 15-year-old son, before leaving with a handbag.
The couple drove from the scene, but returned to the home and threw the handbag out of a car window.
Police chased after the vehicle and intercepted the car on the Benalla-Mansfield Road.
The man fled the car and was chased by several officers through paddocks and a creek before giving up and being arrested.
The couple have been charged with assault offences, robbery and attempted robbery.
The man is also facing drug trafficking charges.
He was denied bail and will reappear at the Shepparton Magistrates Court on May 20.
His partner was granted bail and will appear at the court on the same date.
