The Liberal member since 2003 won his fourth successive election despite a swing to Labor on around 50 per cent of the 50,000 plus votes counted to date.
Mr Aplin has polled 17,419 of the 30,435 votes counted to date.
Counting will resume today with results from four booths in the electorate to be posted.
Labor’s first time candidate Ross Jackson is claiming a swing to his party of more than 10 per cent to date.
Mr Aplin has won every booth counted to date, but Labor has made some solid inroads into the stranglehold enjoyed by Mr Aplin.
The closest margin between the two major contenders was only 20 votes at the Springdale Heights booth.
Mr Aplin has been contacted for comment.
Mr Jackson this morning congratulated Mr Aplin on his win, but was happy with the Labor rebound from the 2011 campaign when the party scraped ahead of independent Paul Wareham with the second highest number of votes behind the Liberal incumbent.
