The driver, 23, and his mate had been at the Cricket World Cup in Melbourne, but both men were forced to catch the train home to Sydney when his car was put on the back of a truck yesterday.
The man was first seen speeding through Euroa at 10.30am, where another motorist called Triple-0.
Wangaratta Highway Patrol waited on the freeway at Glenrowan, and they clocked the vehicle travelling at 155km/h at 11.20am.
Senior-Constable Patrick Murray, of Wangaratta Highway Patrol, said the man would have to pay at least $1000 to get his car back in 30 days.
“Unfortunately this behaviour is far too common,” Senior-Constable Murray said.
“We will be out there in force especially with school holidays and with Easter coming up.”
The driver will become a frequent visitor to the area when he returns to collect his car and faces Wangaratta Magistrates Court for excessive speed and other offences.
