The Hawks led by 31 points early in the third term before a Brendan Fevola masterclass sunk them by 17 points.
Rovers coach Paul Maher said the club was up in arms after many media experts tipped them to slide from fourth to as far as the bottom of the ladder after the departures of stars Daniel Archer, Jamie Sheahan and Jarrad Boumann.
“There’s been so much talk about our departures over the off-season and I hope that’s now behind us and we can talk about the young blokes we’ve got coming through,” he told OAKFM after the match.
“We were really disappointed with (the predictions), especially when we had 16 blokes from the semi-final playing today, and when you see the experts saying we’re going to be the big slider, it’s disappointing and gives us some extra motivation to prove them wrong.”
