The scammers are reported to approach homeowners claiming they are builders with the proper credentials, seeking maintenance work on asphalt driveways and paths.
Those who accept find the original price quoted escalates halfway through the job, and the “tradie” can become intimidatory or demanding if the homeowner refuses to cough up.
Albury Local Area Command recommends always asking for full identification and then following up through the proper channels before accepting any offers from door-to-door tradespeople.
If you think you’ve spotted a scam, report it to SCAMwatch or contact the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission on 1300 795 995.
Police also recommend spreading the word.
