HAVING been country born, bred and enjoyed a lifetime of country living, I have serious concerns regarding the proposed staff reductions at The Border Mail, which no doubt will subsequently result in an operational review involving a downturn in quality and quantity of this newspaper.

For those of us from all walks of life who reside regionally all over our vast nation, a credible newspaper is a source of lifeline and a connection for the people from each town to town, area to area.
Agreed, time will see paper print give way in the main to the electronic press, however I also believe we have not yet reached this time- frame generation wise.
Many residents, particularly those ageing, depend solely on a physical newspaper for news items and commercial reasons. In the country spirit, a regional newspaper could be seen as an appreciated service to country dwellers and not only driven by commercial profit.
It is to be hoped that an understanding of the essential needs of the rural community will prevail and this unfortunate pending management decision can be re-visited.
