They nearly pulled of a remarkable comeback in the final quarter after trailing by 20 points at the last break and with no bench to work with.
Bo Nixon made it through his first game of the season following surgery on his ankle during the off-season in what was one of few positives for coach Leigh Ramsdale.
Dylan Brooks did his hamstring in the first quarter, and Cameron Sandral and Nat Nixon were out of the game by half-time after a nasty head clash that saw Sandral needing his bottom three front teeth re-inserted into his jaw yesterday.
Nixon required stitches in his head, and Ramsdale was left to pick up the pieces after the disastrous outing.
“Nothing went right all day for us, we had blokes pulling out before the match with injury, and it made the first half all the more chaotic,” he said.
“But I give full credit to our players, they really fought hard when they had their backs to the wall.”
The Blues skipped out to a 10-point lead in the first quarter, and had doubled it by three quarter-time before the Hawks started to push for victory.
Despite outscoring their opp- onents five goals to three in the final quarter, Ramsdale rued Barooga’s inaccuracy in front of goal.
“We wasted a lot of opportunities today, but we’ll hang on to that last quarter as a sign of what we’re capable of going forward,” he said.
“Full credit to Numurkah though, we had to chase them all afternoon.
“We have a good opportunity to rest up with a bye this weekend.”
