The driver, 89, turned left from High Street into Elgins Boulevard, mounted the kerb and rammed three cars parked in the Safeway car park.
He then reversed his car across the boulevard, clipping a man who had stopped to help.
The Camry stopped in the car park near the old train station but not before hitting a sign and hitting at least three more cars.
No one was injured other than the man who tried to help. He suffered gravel rash on his forehead.
The driver was taken to hospital by ambulance for observation.
It’s unknown why the man reversed across the road after first contact.
Norm Eyers, who was driving in Elgins Boulevard towards High Street, stopped his car in the middle of the road when he saw the crash unfold.
Mr Eyers, of Wodonga, thought he would try to pull on the Camry’s handbrake as it backed slowly across the boulevard.
“I saw the car coming around the corner and straight into four cars in the Safeway car park,” Mr Eyers said.
“I pulled up my car, put the hazard lights on and jumped out. I opened his door but he must have panicked and jumped on the accelerator.”
The change of pace sent Mr Eyers flying and he hit his head.
“He was out of control,” Mr Eyers said.
“He continued into the car park, cleaned up a sign and left half his body work on the ground.”
The most badly damaged car — a white Holden — was for sale.
Its owner, who declined to give his name, said he had parked in the Safeway park and not on High Street, thinking there was less chance of the car being damaged.
He said he would no longer be able to sell it.
Leading Sen-Constable Glen Allerdice said he didn’t know what had caused the man to crash.
“I’ll attempt to speak to him today but first the hospital has to do its thing and make sure he’s OK,” Sen-Constable Allerdice said.
Fire trucks, ambulance and tow trucks attended the scene.
