Three of the men were armed — one with a baseball bat one with a large garden stake, and the other possibly a metal pole.
They spoke to their victim outside the house in Muir Court, West Wodonga before he ran inside.
They chased him into the house, hitting him in the back with the baseball bat.
They also broke several windows in the fracas.
Police, who were in the area, quickly responded to triple-0 calls made from inside the house.
They used capsicum spray on one of the offenders, who they said had been aggressive towards them and had resisted arrest.
A man, 20, was later charged with criminal damage.
The other offenders fled the scene but police later arrested a man in a car in a nearby street and also charged him with criminal damage.
Police said they were still looking for two other men, and believe one of them could have been armed with a metal bar during the incident.
“There is ill feeling between the parties,” Acting Sgt Tim Mooney said.
“The reasons for that are not known to us.
“There are further inquiries still to be made.”
Several people had been inside the house at the time of the incident.
Sgt Mooney said the victim had not received serious injuries when struck with the bat but had been bruised.
“There are two offenders who still need to be interviewed regarding the matter,” he said.
“We’re hopeful of making arrests in the next couple of days.”
