MORE than 60 staff at the Australian Tax Office’s Albury site will be shifted into new roles as it winds down its paper processing.

The ATO has been quick to stress that no permanent jobs will be lost and no redundancies are being offered.
Instead, staff currently employed in paper processing will be moved into alternative jobs over the next year.
Casual staff in this department will be considered for other casual positions as required.
The Border Mail has made inquiries as to how many casual staff will be affected.
The paper processing function will be outsourced, in a decision that reflects the “significant decrease in the number of paper interactions”, ATO’s assistant commissioner Kath Anderson said.
“This is a strategic business decision. We remain committed to Albury as demonstrated by the move to new purpose built offices in December 2012,” Ms Anderson, who is based in Albury, said.
Last year there was a 30 per cent decrease in the number of hard copy tax lodgements; Ms Anderson said this downward trend was expected to continue as the ATO’s online options improved.
The first outsourced processing will begin in September 2015 and the full transition will take a year.
