Nepalese mountain guide Ang Tshering Lama has slammed the Hyatt Regency in Kathmandu, claiming it is refusing entry to Nepalese people trying to access the resort's manicured grounds, which are set among 37 acres.

The founder of expedition company, Angs Himalayan Adventures, said he was initially stopped from entering the grounds on Sunday when he tried to visit an American friend who was staying at the luxury resort.

Mr Lama said Saturday's 7.8-magnitude earthquake, which claimed at least 3600 lives and triggered a deadly avalanche on Mount Everest, had devastated the capital city and forced many displaced locals onto the streets.

"Everything is cramped up," he said. "People are sitting in the middle of the road to get away. What will it cost for people to sleep a night or two on a lawn? If they just let people sit on the green grass ... nobody's going to sleep on the beds in the Hyatt."

Mr Lama said he was eventually allowed into the grounds to meet his friend but that other locals were turned away by guards. "I saw other people wanting to go in there but the guards weren't letting them enter. That broke my heart," he said.

In a post on Facebook that has been shared more than 4000 times, Mr Lama called for a boycott of the Hyatt Regency, accusing the hotel of allowing only a "few rich people and some westerners in" and ignoring the plight of locals.

He also posted pictures that appear to show tourists relaxing in the gardens, and photographs taken around the city showing Nepalese people camping in makeshift tents.

The post sparked condemnation against the hotel on social media, with users labelling the hotel's apparent decision to close the grounds off to the public "absolutely disgusting" and "appalling".

"You have room in your gardens and on your lawns for people to share. Your people need your help and compassion. Shame on you," Helen Thompson said.

Maya Chongbang said: "I used to be a regular guest at your hotel but now I need to find a different hotel!."

"Shame on you Hyatt Regency!! You've lost many local paying customers," wrote Sarala Rai.

The Hyatt Regency did not respond to a request for comment on Tuesday.

But in a statement on its website, the hotel said staff had worked tirelessly since the earthquake to support guests, colleagues and neighbours.

"Confirming everyone's whereabouts was the first priority, followed by ensuring their safety," it said. "The next step was doing what they could to help guests get home, so that staff could start to focus more on the relief effort. The hotel is also readying support for colleagues and their families."

The 280-room Hyatt Regency Kathmandu has not been certified as structurally sound and still has no electricity or running water, the statement said, but engineers were working to ensure the building's safety so it could host international relief organisations that will use the facility as a base.

Hyatt's official Twitter account responded to a post on Monday criticising the hotel for failing to open its lawns to locals.

"Thank you for sharing your concerns. Please note we're working with the hotel to get the latest updates about this situation," @HyattConcierge said.
