But then, it’s not every day that a world-renowned ballet company comes to the bush to perform one of Tchaikovsky’s greatest masterpieces, Sleeping Beauty.
One of only a handful of state ballet companies in Moscow, in line with the Bolshoi, Moscow Ballet La Classique will bring to life one of the best-loved fairytales at the Albury Entertainment Centre, with lavish costumes and magnificent stage sets.
Artistic director Elik Melikov said audiences would be taken on a mystical journey into the fairytale world of Princess Aurora in a dance spectacular.
“Classical ballet is the eternal art,” he said.
“Spectators, ballet lovers, children and adults will always enjoy classical ballet, which is why even after two centuries the ballets of Tchaikovsky are still popular around the world.
“Each ballet dancer interprets the main characters in line with their own view and understanding.
“But the costumes and stage decoration, the scenography, all reflect the historic time Sleeping Beauty was first staged in 1892 in the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg.”
The ballet company first came to Albury in 2013 with a performance of The Nutcracker.
Keeping much of the traditional ballet alive, the only significant change to the original performances will be the length of the show.
“The main aim is to preserve and creatively work with classical productions staged by the great ballet masters,” Melikov said.
“At that time performances were very long, about four hours, because in the 19th century there was no television, radio or other entertainment.
“Theatre was the only chance for culture lovers to enjoy themselves.
“Now we have kept the fundamental melodies and dances and the performance lasts about two hours, but the core is preserved and the company goes on with these fundamentals.”
Moscow Ballet La Classique will perform Sleeping Beauty at the Albury Entertainment Centre on Thursday at 7.30pm. Tickets $85 adults, $75 concession, $55 children under-13. For more information visit alburycity.nsw.gov.au.
