While the North East and Border are well-known for their fine wines, craft beer is on the up with specialist breweries “hopping” up all over the place.
And those with a taste for the amber ale are becoming so brave with their beer choices, it’s spawned the Border’s first craft beer festival.
It will be held on Sunday at Albury’s Beer DeLuxe — or as it’s still affectionately known, Paddy’s Bar.
Beer DeLuxe fest spokesman Matt O’Kane said the event would be a lead up to Good Beer Week from May 16 to 24 in Melbourne and across Victoria.
Beer DeLuxe’s flagship venue in Federation Square is the Good Beer Week hub.
Mr O’Kane said the Albury event was based on feedback from patrons keen to have something of their own.
He said beer was increasingly popular across the region.
“We’re famous for wine but if you look at places like Myrtleford or the King Valley, the climate is perfect for growing hops as well,” he said.
“Craft beer’s been a buzz word for a while now, but it’s really no longer a case of people coming in and just having a big session on Carlton Draught.
“People are becoming more discerning in their choices and are looking to explore different tastes.
“They’re looking for quality not quantity.”
Sunday’s free event will showcase local and interstate breweries, including Bridge Road, Bright, Cheeky Peak, Matilda Bay, Little Creatures, Stone & Wood, and Grand Ridge.
It kicks off at noon with tastings, street food, live music and entertainment, and children’s activities.
