The Lavington men, aged in their 20s, entered the bottle shop about 5.20pm Saturday.
They each targeted a bottle of bourbon and ran from the scene before being chased by a staff member.
Police were driving past at the time and quickly arrested the duo.
Owner Tom Weatherall said he was amazed by the would-be thieves’ actions, with their faces clearly visible in security footage.
“These guys are professional idiots,” he said.
“They’re on camera and they robbed the place in daylight.
“I think they would be in the top-10 list of stupid thieves.”
One of the men smashed a stolen bottle when confronted by police, Mr Weatherall said.
He said he had been impressed by the actions of police.
“Most people in our community are outstanding and honest,” he said.
“I am always amazed by the kindness of generosity of the general public.
“While I think these couple of guys are outstandingly stupid, my general view is that most of the young people in our region are really switched on.”
The men were charged and will face court next month.
