The Bureau of Meteorology says winds of 60km/h with peak gusts of 90 to 100kmh will hit parts of the North East, with gusts of up to 110kmh in Alpine areas.
"A cold front has moved rapidly through western and central Victoria this morning and will weaken in the east this afternoon," a statement from the Bureau said.
"An associated deep low pressure system will pass south of Tasmania tonight."
Since midnight the highest wind gusts measured have been Mt Hotham 106km/h, Mt Buller 113km/h and Mount William 95km/h.
