What’s the go this week?
Well, Mulwala’s dropping as we speak and we’ve had a few mixed reports.
At the time of writing there’s no problems getting a boat in but as the lake drops expect it to get tougher.
Also expect that weed they’re trying to kill off to become more of a pest.
It’s already a pain and lots of fishos are solely using Spinnerbaits to try to alleviate the problem a little.
Spinnerbaits certainly travel through weed much better than Hardbodies.
In saying that there’s still some good fish being caught on lures like Custom Crafted “fish sticks”, “hammerheads” and Oargee “plows”.
Most cod have been picked up trolling in and out of the channels in areas where the weed’s not quite as bad but if it gets too much for you, you can always dangle a bait for a while until the frustration subsides.
The Murray above Mulwala up to Albury sounds like its been a little frustrating too.
I had a phone call on Sunday from one fisho who had been having a bit of a crack for a couple of days and did no good at all.
These sorts of reports are just as important to us as the “we caught heaps at spot x” reports.
We can hopefully point customers away from the “dud” spots of the day and maybe to more successful areas which will obviously give a more enjoyable experience so, with the water fluctuating like it is I’d recommend an extra hours travel and direct you to the Bidgee if it’s river fishing for cod you’re after.
The Bidgee’s reasonably low, there’s quite a few small ones between keepers but there’s reasonable numbers of cod being caught.
The Upper Murray’s another alternative too.
Success often revolves around river levels and if you time it right I’m sure you’ll do well.
Either bait or lure depending on the day so its wise to cover both bases and take it all with you.
While talking Upper Murray, Khancoban pondage is worth a look.
It’s patchy, like just about everywhere else, but some really nice fish have been showing in catches from keen fishos.
There’s the odd trout over 2kg and the odd red fin too.
Most trout are being caught on the troll with minnows such as Rapalas and Nilmasters or Cobra style lures such as Stings, King Cobras or Tassie Devils picking up the larger percentage of fish caught.
Most of the reddies reported aren’t huge and are generally being caught as a bycatch.
Blowering’s still pretty quiet while Burrinjuck’s a little better.
There’s a few yellas being both angled on shrimp and being picked up on small divers at the Juck.
Lake Hume? Well, I’ve been discussing it with a few very keen fishos who get out there fairly regularly.
The fact is we’re still in discussions and can’t decide if one there’s a very faint pulse, two we should get the defibrillator out and give it some shock treatment or three just declare it dead!
The only problem we have if we decide to go with the dead verdict is working out “time of death”.
It had to be a while ago because most of us agree it’s certainly on the nose at the moment.
Oh, I don’t know it’s not quite that bad.
Hold on, who am I kidding — yes it is.
The spawning run on Eucumbene river needs another flush of water.
It’s been a bit tough up there although a few have run up here and there.
Like most fishing it’s all about your timing.
Mitta river’s going OK as are a few of the streams now and Dartmouth is still the pick of the lakes for trout.
Catch ya next week.
Stop Press: VRFISH are asking for submissions regarding the taking of trout cod from Lake Sambell and Lake Kerferd near Beechworth.
These lakes have been stocked with trout cod for a number of years and there’s a push to allow anglers to be allowed to keep one of a legal length if they wish.
Your opinion is sought by next Saturday.
