A DECADE after it sponsored a similar study into the future of the city’s pools, the Albury Council has reappointed SGL Consulting Group to complete a new assessment and come up with an aquatics solution.

Ten years ago, SGL recommended Albury Swim Centre as the site for a $20 million international-standard indoor pool.
Obviously, the plan never went ahead and with Albury’s pools nearing to the end of their life, the city is no closer to having a solution to replace them and meet future demand.
The same consultants also recommended Willow Park as the ideal spot for a $26 million indoor pool for Wodonga and we remember the public opposition to those plans before the city decided to build WAVES at White Box Rise.
But while Wodonga has its new pool, the region is “treading water” on the development of an international-standard indoor pool that would provide the opportunity for year-round training and swimming, and allow Albury-Wodonga to host more elite aquatics competitions.
Community groups such as Fish Out Of Water would argue it’s time to make good on those lost opportunities and consider how Albury can develop such a centre — and do it soon.
