Four months ago he was allowed out of jail for the first time under the supervision of a prison officer.
At Beechworth’s minimum security prison, he has been able to re-engage with the public on day release, undertaking activities including painting and gardening, as well as taking part in fundraising events such as fetes and sausage sizzles.
He says while his initial release was frightening, causing him anxiety, he is now more comfortable taking part in activities that raise money to provide school students with iPads and sporting equipment, that can be used in their education.
Corrections Victoria deputy commissioner Rod Wise says the program is imperative in helping prisoners to be seen as part of the community and realise they can give back something positive.
The relationship between the community and the prison is imperative to the program’s success and should be commended on both sides in helping prisoners find their way to a new life.
