BORDER-WALWA has moved off the bottom of the ladder for the first time in more than three years after stunning Corryong by 35 points at Corryong on Saturday.
The league whipping-boys for the past three seasons booted six goals to one in the opening quarter to lay the foundations for the drought-breaking win.
It was a lead they would never surrender to eventually secure a 14.15 (99) to 9.10 (64) victory over last season’s grand finalist.
Daniel McCarthy emerged as the surprise packet for the visitors after switching from the midfield to attack and bobbed-up with five goals to claim best-on-ground honours.
Young ruckman Ash Greenhill was also prominent after coming off early in the contest with a shoulder injury but returning to give the Magpies midfielders an edge at the stoppages.
Thurgoona recruit Craig Bosley was lively early in the contest, dragging down several strong contested marks in the opening quarter before tearing his hamstring early in the second quarter.
He spent the remainder of the match on the bench.
Matt McNamara, Daniel McInnes and Demon coach Evan Nicholas battled hard for the home side but look set for a long season after losing over a dozen players from last season’s grand final side.
In other matches Bullioh upset Federal by 35 points to underline its top-two credentials.
Raging flag favourite Cudgewa crushed Tumbarumba by 108 points with Brendan McEvoy and Bill Deery leading the onslaught.
