Cr Cameron made his call last month after a teenage girl reported a sexual assault near the Harold Mair Bridge.

A police investigation soon determined that there had been no attack.

Cr Cameron has lodged a notice of motion for tonight’s council meeting that calls on the NSW transport minister, Duncan Gay, and the member for Albury, Greg Aplin, to instigate discussions about placing CCTV camcameras on top of the two pedestrian bridges linking East Albury and the city centre.

He said the talks are a “matter of urgency”.

“These bridges are owned and maintained by the state government,” Cr Cameron said yesterday.

“The council is doing the right thing by putting CCTV into Dean Street.

“As the state government’s representative in Albury, Mr Aplin has a moral responsibility and obligation to ensure security is upgraded in these spaces.”

NSW Roads and Maritime Services is the responsible authority for the bridges.

Cr Cameron has pushed for CCTV cameras to be installed in Dean Street with the council due to soon discuss the issue again.

Last month a 17-year-old girl reported being approached by three men on the footbridge at the end of Dean Street about 6.20pm. She told police she had been dragged along a nearby bike path into bushes and sexually assaulted.

Police approached businesses for security footage and the girl was treated at Albury hospital.

After three days of investigation, police ended the search for the men.

During the investigation, Albury mayor Kevin Mack came under fire for comments he made about women walking alone and felt compelled to make a public apology on the same day police that ended their investigation.

Cr Cameron said the presence of CCTV cameras would have allowed to resolve their investigation sooner.

“Had CCTV been in place at the time, it would have established who exactly was in the area at the time,” he said.

“Also it could have helped police speed up their investigation.”
