Or bowl and field for that matter?
Then one cricketer’s call to action could be just the solution as over-60s cricket comes to the Border North East.
Peter Jacobsen is well on the way to establishing the region’s first over-60s cricket team which will play in an existing, statewide competition run under the auspices of the Victorian Over Sixties Cricket Association.
“If you’ve got a love of cricket it’s pretty hard to stop playing,” Jacobsen said.
“The reason why most blokes do is because they can’t compete any more.
“But this isn’t a competitive environment, it’s a friendly environment.”
Starting in 2003, there are Jacobsen said there were now 22 teams in the competition.
“Except for the North East, and that’s what I’m trying to do,” he said.
The competition will be a Sunday fixture, starting the weekend after the AFL grand final, though the North East team will not compete in the first round.
But Jacobsen said the competition was a chance for older players to keep swinging the willow, keeping active and fit.
“This is a different atmosphere — it’s competitive, but it’s competitively social,” he said.
“Everybody wants to take wickets and everybody wants to make runs — but it is more about having fun, and everybody enjoys themselves immensely.”
In a bid to be central to cricketers across the region, from Shepparton, Benalla, Wangaratta, Albury-Wodonga and the Upper Murray, Jacobsen said the team would play its home games at Benalla’s Rose Gardens Oval.
“There is a team and there is a ground, so now’s the time to find the players,” Jacobsen said.
Jacobsen said as well as the health benefits and the camaraderie, the benefits of playing under VOSCA was the chance for over-60s to be called up to the Aussie team.
“Each year there’s a national carnival where the states play against each other, so there’s the chance to represent your state,” he said.
