The AFL Hall of Famer will head overseas for a pre-booked family holiday this week with injured skipper David Miles and assistant-coach Craig Mannagh to share the coaching duties.
The Hoppers charged into the top three for the first time this season with a comfortable win against Myrtleford at McNamara Reserve on Saturday.
Akermanis said he had wanted to take a winter holiday with his family for several years.
“The players know what they need to do and what’s expected of them,” Akermanis said.
“I’ve been saying to my family we need to get out of here over the winter for a number of years now, and outside of the first couple of years after I retired from the AFL that hasn’t really been a possibility.
“I haven’t felt the boys were capable of performing to the standard needed while I’m away until now.
“They’re a lot more educated now in terms of understanding what’s required of them, they know who their bosses are and who to listen to.
“Everything is in place, and there’s no excuses for anything that happens while I’m away.
“David Miles and Craig Mannagh are both very capable leaders, and Reece Tanner will bob up and help them out as well.”
Akermanis will miss North Albury’s matches against Corowa-Rutherglen, Wodonga and Wangaratta before returning to take charge against Wodonga Raiders on July 4.
The Brownlow medallist was unable to coach in the opening round of the season due to suspension when North Albury went down to Wodonga at John Flower Oval.
