The Steamer’s elusive winger is drawing on the brains of teammates to further his rugby knowledge — the dream to play in England later this year.
So far it appears to be working with Allen a part of the Southern Inland Rugby rep side that dominated the Brumbies Provincial tournament in Wagga last weekend.
Coach Mick Raynes believes one of his many backline stars is a more mature player this year.
Allen says he’s simply learning from the best.
“I was only 17 when I started playing at Murrayfield and a year later I was in the first grade side that was beaten in a semi-final against Ag College,” he said.
“I went away to ANU to study and played some rugby up there in Canberra but it has been since I returned midway through last year that I have been able to take advantage of the rugby knowledge of people like Richard Manion and, more recently, James Olds.
“Then you add in Blake Le Cornu and now Lex Botha and you can’t help but grow as a rugby player.
“They are great role models who lead from the front and happy to pass on their knowledge.”
The Steamers face a major hurdle when they take on Leeton at Murrayfield today.
Both sides are undefeated after eight rounds but the blue and golds will be without Manion, Olds, Botha, Ash Lefevre and Liam Krautz — all a part of the Brumbies side playing NSW Country today in Canberra.
Tom Boyle is also out after hurting an ankle last week.
Allen, who started as a fly-half and played a bit of fullback, will stay on the wing today.
Reece Le Cornu and Liam Crowley will come into the centres, Dave Coyle go back to No. 8 for Lefevre and Scott Ison will come to first grade.
He believes the Steamers can rise to the challenge and expects a few changes for the clash with the Phantoms.
“The back three all have a similar role to play but I know I’m not as good a fullback as Jimmy (Olds) when he’s in the side,” he said.
“We know losing players to the Canberra game is going to make it tough but the club spirit is strong and we have plenty of players who can step up.”
