Polo was best afield for the fourth successive week as the home team went on a goalkicking spree after quarter-time to score their biggest win of the season.
In a devastating third quarter, the reigning premier kicked 12.3 to 3.0, with the class of Polo, Chris Hyde, Brayden O’Hara and Joel Mackie even drawing praise from the Wangaratta Rovers bench.
Tiger co-coach Daniel Maher said it was difficult to fault the performance.
“We spoke about wanting a consistent four-quarter effort before the match and I thought we got that,” Maher said.
“It’s something we haven’t been able to do this season.
“We could have fallen away, but the boys kept going and I think we kicked 12 and five goals in the third and last quarters.”
Big Setanta o’hAilpin was the chief destroyer after the Rovers lost Tyson Hartwig to a thumb injury before the game.
He enjoyed every one of his eight goals, with many coming after playing on from marks, while his brother Aisake recovered from an early injury scare to boot four.
Speedster Elliott Powell was outstanding with his pace and long kicking, O’Hara was back to his brilliant best and young Michael Duncan showed plenty of poise every time he won possession.
When Wangaratta Rovers did go forward, Tiger pair Justin Carey had the measure of Hawk dangerman Dan McCullough and Hyde rebounded superbly off half-back.
Rovers coach Paul Maher hoped the loss was a good learning experience for his young team.
“We stayed with Albury in the first quarter but they were too good after that,” Maher said.
Diminutive Rover Dylan Stone battled gamely for the Hawks.
He kicked the opening two goals and was a lion-hearted contributor, with support from ruckman Shane Gaston, Ben Kneebone and Alex Marklew.
