It’s been a slow start to the ski season with little snowfall at Falls Creek and Mount Hotham.
But Senior Sergeant Doug Incoll, of Bright police, said officers were preparing for the influx of vehicles and is warning motorists to follow the rules.
“Over the past few years chain enforcement has been a high priority for police,” he said.
“That causes us the most angst each season.
“People are slowly getting the message but there will be no discretion in regards to chain offences, and police make no apology for that.”
Each vehicle is required to carry snow chains on the mountains and fit them at certain points, with fines of up to $590, which will increase next month.
“Most drivers are pretty good,” he said.
“Most of the low speed collisions are avoidable if people drive to the conditions.
“People need to check the weather and snow conditions rather than it being a surprise.
“Conditions can change at a moment’s notice.”
Drivers are also encouraged to ensure their car has a full tank of fuel, that anti-freeze is used in radiators, and to avoid braking when driving around corners.
People should also take smartphones, maps, GPS units, and compasses to prevent a search and rescue emergency.
Officers are stationed at the resorts, and Senior Sergeant Incoll is also warning snow-goers to be wary of thieves.
“With the first big dump of snow a lot of people will be going up for the first time,” he said.
“People just need to be prepared.
“The roads leading to the resorts are very dangerous and there’s a whole different set of driving skills that are required.
“It requires concentration, patience and proper driving skills.”
