The Lester and Son funeral director took part in this month’s Stadium Stomp at the Adelaide Oval and is now gearing up for the same event at the MCG and the SCG next month.
“It’s something that’s a bit of fun,” he said.
“I enjoy the fitness side of it and training towards a goal.”
The stadium stomp events have been billed as Australia’s ultimate stair climb challenge.
Mr Payne, from Leneva, took part in the MCG event last year with his wife, Jacinta.
The couple will once again take to the course together, with Mr Payne registering for the full course (7343 stairs) while his wife will take part in the half course (1890 steps).
As part of their training, they have been taking advantage of any stairs they find.
“The best training tool has been the stairs around Dean Street near the railway station,” Mr Payne said.
The pair raised $600 for the Leukaemia Foundation last year, but are not raising money this year.
“We are concentrating on the fitness side of things this year,” Mr Payne said.
“I gave myself a new challenge — to complete three stomp events,” he said.
