Five juniors — Thurgoona’s Sam Bakes, 10, Cornelius Van Dyk, 14, and Jackson Payne, along with Holbrook’s Matthew Bender, 13, and Corowa’s Andrew Love, 15, — will be subsidised by the association for a residential training camp at Yarrawonga from tomorrow.
The juniors will eat, breathe and sleep golf — every hour of their day dedicated to practice, playing and theory at the Glenn McCully school.
MDGA president Kelvin Gilder said the program was not targeting the elite.
“This is for the emerging golfers, the up and comers,” he said.
“We know we have to grow the game in a very competitive market for juniors and these five golfers have all been identified both in the way they play the game and their manner.
“The North Eastern junior boys camp is a major event for our district junior as it helps to develop their overall golfing skills and helps them with key area of their game that needs fine tuning.
“From past experiences, juniors who have attended the camp have shown significant improvement in the golf and have generally reduced their handicaps.”
Sixteen juniors will be part of the camp starting tomorrow and will use the Black Bull golf course as part of the tuition.
