The Matildas have been dealt a harsh lesson. Though their progression to the World Cup quarter-finals showed how far they have come, their defeat to reigning world champions Japan, after being outclassed for much of the match, showed how far they still have to go if they are to establish themselves as a powerhouse in women's football.
