Cr Darren Cameron says the proposal supported by lobby group Fish Out of Water should not even be seriously considered.
The regional aquatic centre is a grand proposal indeed, featuring a 50-metre indoor pool, diving and water polo facilitates and an estimated price tag of a whopping $40 million.
That’s about four times the cost of the art gallery redevelopment that the city’s finances are already committed to.
Cr Cameron has also questioned the equity of the proposal, with the Lavington pool bound to be a casualty if a super aquatic centre were to go ahead.
He says the plan discriminates against families in Lavington and North Albury, and the matter is close to his heart.
Retaining the Lavington pool was one of his motivations in his return to council in 2012.
The super aquatic centre would be an incredible asset for a city like Albury, and would draw events and people from all over the country. But with a price of $40 million, ratepayers should not only have a say on the matter, they should be able to cast a vote.
