VicRoads has quashed the council’s plans for all but three of the raised zebra crossings because they do not include flashing lights.
Council will now have to reassess its plan for seven crossings it wanted to build throughout the central business district.
It was hoped the crossings, at a cost of $170,000, would support pedestrians and boost retail.
VicRoads has signed off on the crossings that, with flashing lights, are $40,000 more expensive than those without lights.
But it’s not a decision that will come an any great inconvenience to council.
It picked up $10 million in funding at the federal budget which it says has rendered its original plan obsolete anyway.
And so it is back to the drawing board for the council on the crossings and its plans to make the city centre pedestrian-friendly.
But it should be obvious now if it wasn’t before than VicRoads will expect safety first on any crossings, and there won’t be any wombats coming unless they come with flashing lights.
