JESSICA O’Callaghan never set out to play the trumpet, but her initial choice — the trombone — was too large for her at the age of 10.

The 14-year-old from Melbourne has never looked back.
“The trumpet is great and I find it easier to read treble clef music, whereas the trombone is bass clef,” she said.
“I did start out with the trombone, but it was too big for me at the time.”
Miss O’Callaghan has spent the past week at the Border Music Camp being held at The Scots School Albury.
“It’s my fourth time back here and it’s just great because you make friends and get to catch up each year you return,” she said.
Joe O’Callaghan, her father, is a conductor at the camp and inspired her to learn an instrument, while her two brothers are also at the camp enhancing their trombone skills.
Border Band Camp director Alastair McKean said it was great to see everyone back for the annual event.
“We have 210 students, which is down on last year, but on par with previous years,” he said.
Students will perform tonight at 7.30pm at The Scots School.
