Wangaratta is chasing $4 million in federal government support for the pool to be added to the indoor facility at Barr Reserve.
Its submission has to be lodged by the end of the month and administrators will confirm at a special meeting on Monday whether council can deliver on its matching funding in the 2015-16 budget and beyond if successful in obtaining the federal cash.
The funding application comes against the back-drop of heightened political interest in the federal seat of Indi in which Wangaratta and Wodonga are the two largest population centres.
The Coalition government is desperately trying to win back the seat from independent MP Cathy McGowan.
The $10 million funding boost for central Wodonga and 30 mobile phone towers across Indi are evidence the electorate is firmly in the sights of all political parties.
A Wangaratta Council delegation met Ms McGowan and senior staff from the office of deputy prime minister Warren Truss on a recent visit to Canberra about the aquatics upgrades.
Mr Truss is also the minister for regional development and infrastructure and his department is in charge of the national stronger regions fund that is investing $1 billion over five years in key infrastructure projects.
Wangaratta didn’t apply in the initial round that Wodonga received $10 million.
Wangaratta Council has closed the Olympic and Yarrunga pools to consolidate aquatics facilities at the Wangaratta Indoor Sport and Aquatic Centre.
State government funding of $3 million is also being sought and Wangaratta Swim Club has committed $100,000 to the project.
Swimming is the third most popular physical activity behind walking and cycling in the city.
The overall aquatics upgrades project has been budgeted at $14.6 million.
The special meeting on Monday is also expected to tick off Water Features by Design as the successful tender for the $650,000 splash park in Mitchell Avenue.
The recommended tender is within budget.
