Tumbarumba threatened to cause a boilover after it kicked the opening three goals of the match with Jarrod Turner, Jack Vogan and Bryce Campton all lively early.
Cudgewa absorbed the initial onslaught and finished full of running to eventually win 16.10 (106) to 10.13 (73).
Coach Aaron Lezius said a hint of complacency may have crept into the Blues’ camp after notching several big wins in recent weeks.
“Tumba were pretty switched on and jumped us at the start,” Lezius said.
“I guess it’s one of those things where you can get a bit complacent.
“Our past three games we have won by over 100 points and it’s hard to keep the same level of motivation each week.
“It took us a while to get going, but to the boys credit once we did we were able to get the job done.”
The Blues went into the clash without forward Bill Deery (hamstring tightness) and giant ruckman Al Cleven (unavailable).
In an unusual move, Bullioh’s Jacob Schliebs played against Cudgewa last week but was rushed into the Blues’ line-up after being cleared by the Bulldogs during the week.
Schliebs had an instant impact for his new side and was named in the best alongside Jake Carkeek, Dane Arthur and Mitch Pynappels
Federal spanked Bullioh by 97 points while Corryong defeated Border Walwa by 13 points, 12.11 (83) to 10.10 (70).
