There have been speed restrictions linked to mud holes, seemingly never-ending repair work to the line, complaints about the cleanliness of trains and graffiti attacks on carriages.
Now V/Line is investigating the actions of a driver at the controls of the Saturday evening service from Melbourne’s Southern Cross station to Albury-Wodonga.
Passengers were thrown to the floor of the train as carriages became unsteady.
What caused that lurching is under scrutiny with the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator and Transport Safety Victoria also possibly joining with V/Line to examine the episode.
A transparent investigation is required.
Travellers should know whether there were speed restrictions in place which were ignored and what the condition of the track was like.
Considering the long record of problems with the line and the lack of confidence that was sparked in the minds of many it is important V/Line is upfront.
Faith in the service can only be ensured by a thorough and open probe.
