SUZY Martin likened last Friday’s female dispersal sale at Welcome Swallow Angus Stud, which she owns with her husband Jim, to taking a white water raft trip.

“We got a great result but there was a bit of melancholy, sadness, relief and excitement all mixed in together,” she said.
“And it was a little bit scary.
“I suppose what made it more frantic was that we had such a short period of time from announcing the sale to when it was actually held.
“We were very grateful for the support we received from our wonderful friends and clients in the seedstock industry.”
The Martins established the stud in 1994 and built it into one that had a high profile and a lot of prestige within the industry.
But Suzy, a Benalla City councillor, said their livestock manager Brett Walker played a massive part in their success.
“Brett has been with us from the start and stood shoulder to shoulder with us all the way through,” she said.
“We could not have built up our brand without him.”
Suzy also gave credit to the team at Glasser Total Sales Management (GTSM) which conducted the dispersal sale.
“Doing business with (principals) Michael and Marion Glasser and the whole GTSM team has made this job easy,” she said.
“Their marketing expertise and support has played an important part in our success as well.”
Michael Glasser said the Martins had certainly had an impact on the angus seedstock industry.
“They have been at the forefront of using the latest imported genetics and sires,” he said.
“They are a loss to the industry, both with their ability as cattle people and their personalities.
“However, their legacy is that the dispersal sales hold opportunities for others to benefit from their work.
“On a personal level the situation is a sad one for myself and my wife Marion.
“The Martins were one of our original, and long term, clients.
“We have become close friends over the years as our business success have grown together.”
For the record, 243 of 257 joined angus cows and heifers sold to an average of $2452 and a top of $15,500, with some sales taking place after the auction.
Eleven recipient cows were offered and sold to $2500 and an average of $2,000.
Fifty one semen and embryo lots sold to $490.
More than 200 people attended, with Suzy saying they consumed many kilo of angus beef burgers and sausages, supplied by McDonald’s Meat at Mount Beauty, a client of Welcome Swallow
The Martins will hold the dispersal sale of their Charolais herd in conjunction with their angus bull spring sale on September 9 at 1pm.
